Trattoria la vecchia guardia: Reviews & Ratings
I had a very good osso buco here — rich, flavorful, and the portion was generous enough to feed two people. They also offered a complimentary starter, which was a nice touch. However, I believe the bread basket is charged separately, and I forgot to decline it since I was dining alone and didn’t really need the extra food. The meal was very expensive, but I suppose that’s to be expected in Milan, especially if you’re eating solo and want to try a classic Milanese dish at a well-recommended spot. If you’re visiting with more people, the experience might feel like better value for money. That said, the food quality is excellent, and it’s a solid choice for tasting a Milanese specialty.
The best food we had in Italy! The beef cheeks, ravioli and veal cutlet were to die for. They also gave us a complimentary desserts that were delicious. Absolutely lovely!
The starters were delicious, especially the whole grain focaccia. We also ate the best ravioli of our lives! Tried all the different flavours they had and they were all amazing! The service was super attentive and thoughtful and the overall restaurant vibe was very fun and homey. We had an amazing time!
We had a fantastic dinner here - the perfect grand finale to our holiday in Milan. The ossobuco was outstanding, and the Milanese risotto was excellent, with just the right amount of saffron, Parmesan, and perfectly cooked rice. We truly appreciated the waiter’s honesty about portion sizes, as we were about to order an oxtail dish each; in reality, the portions were very generous, and sharing just the risotto and ossobuco was more than enough for two. We also loved the chef’s complimentary amuse-bouche - a small croquette with spicy bread, if I remember correctly. I would gladly bring family and friends here for any occasion, without hesitation. Other than that, reservation is highly recommended!
Quality food and great service in a cozy little restaurant. Probably the best lunch of our trip. The ossobuco was incredible - meat so soft and tender off the bone, and the pasta alla menta with mozzarella was delicious. Also the berries with vanilla ice cream for dessert was a dream
This is a solid 5 stars review! Food was supper super delicious, delicate, also got an appetizer as complimentary, love it, also not very cheap but definitely worth it
A family restaurant with food Rizotto Ossobuco must try it out. They also served us with an entrance on the house, . You will not be disappointed if you cross its threshold, but tastes are not discussed. ????????
Amazing Milanese food from the risotto to the veal. The veal Milanese was so big I thought the waitress had brought me the plate for 2 by mistake. It provided lunch the next day too. Very nice staff, the family has run the business since 1967. The desert was excellent as was a Vin Santo for only 3 euros. The only thing we found odd was how bright the lighting was; next time I'll bring sunglasses. LOL.

Nestled in the heart of Milan on Via della Commenda, Trattoria la vecchia guardia embodies the rich tradition of classic Milanese cuisine with an inviting, homey atmosphere. This cozy trattoria captures the essence of Italy’s culinary heritage, offering dishes that stand out for their authenticity, generous portions, and impeccable flavors.
What truly defines Trattoria la vecchia guardia is its mastery over Milanese specialties. The ossobuco, a slow-braised veal shank, arrives tender and rich, with meat that falls off the bone effortlessly. It’s a dish with depth, suffused with fragrant herbs and slow-cooked perfection. Complementing it is the Milanese risotto, perfectly cooked al dente and infused with saffron’s delicate aroma, enhanced by a subtle blend of Parmesan. Together, they create a harmonious balance of textures and tastes that evoke the city’s culinary soul.
Beyond the signature ossobuco, the menu surprises with standout dishes like the melt-in-your-mouth beef cheeks and the best ravioli many diners have ever experienced—each bite bursting with fresh, complex flavors. The whole grain focaccia and fresh pasta alla menta with mozzarella are further expressions of the kitchen’s dedication to quality ingredients and refined simplicity.
One of the charming touches here is the complimentary amuse-bouche, a thoughtful appetizer that primes your palate and signals the attentiveness of the staff. Guests often note the warm, attentive service, which creates an intimate dining experience. Even the desserts, such as fresh berries paired with vanilla ice cream, maintain the high standard seen throughout the meal.
While pricing can be on the higher side—expected in a prime Milan location—the generosity of portions and the quality of ingredients justify the expense, especially for groups sharing traditional plates. For solo diners, a heads-up about extras like the bread basket might help tailor the experience. Reservations are advised, as this gem is popular with both locals and travelers craving an authentic taste of Milan.
In sum, Trattoria la vecchia guardia is a deeply satisfying destination for anyone seeking genuine Milanese flavors served with care and passion. The blend of classic dishes, cozy ambiance, and thoughtful service leaves a lasting impression, perfect for an unforgettable meal in Italy’s gastronomic capital.
